In short, this is a great place with a very welcoming atmosphere and great value food.

I was there with my wife and we had Norfolk Mussels and Dates in Bacon as starters. Both were absolutely delicious and I would rate them 6 out of 5 stars, if I could, for the great combination of ingredients. As main course we had the Sirloin Steak and Mint Crusted Lamb Chops. Unfortunately those dishes were not in the same league as the starters. We ordered the steak medium and it was slightly under-cooked (luckily my wife liked it like this) and the the lamb was a bit too long on the grill. The Sticky Toffee Pudding as a dessert was brilliant again and the perfect end to our meal. We had white house wine to our meal which was also very good.

I would give the whole evening 4.5 stars. Because only full stars are possible I decided to give 5 points as 4 seem too harsh for the perfect starters and dessert.

This is a place I can definitely recommend due to lovely ambiance, the welcoming staff, and great food.

A restaurant that sets out to prove that 'English cuisine' is a real thing. Good roasts and pies, and often gourmet sausages, are on the menu. Local duck, or beef farmed in Cambridge, also make an appearance in season.
Quite an upmarket restaurant, with service to match - but the price also matches. It's not out of reach of the student crowd, but definitely somewhere you'd go for a special occasion, not an everyday haunt.
They have the slightly odd feature of working with a particular wine region in France, so the selection is a little eccentric - but if you want to stay within the English theme, jugs of beer are also an option. And as well as the usual dessert wines and digestifs, there's a good whisky selection, if you can bear paying restaurant prices for it.

No car or bike parking on-site, which is a bit odd considering the location.

Had a lovely lunch here for a friend's birthday. A little pricey but normal for Cambridge. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Managed to sit 9 of us in one area, it was a Sunday so was restricted to the Sunday lunch menu but they said if there was anything we wanted specifically we should let them know in advance and they'd see what they could do. The vegetarian option for a Sunday roast was available on request too.

Food was lovely, staff were great. This is the duck salad. It came with potatoes which was surprising, would have been good to have a clearer description of what the warm duck salad would be, but nice none the less.

Even as a vegetarian I loved my experience here. These guys know how to cook boiled vegetables - cabbage, peas and broccoli were bright green, crunchy and flavourful - quite a rare find.

Have to admit that the veggie menu is limited and different to the details online (due to recent menu change), and further limited as I don't like goats cheese. However they were able to rustle up 'something vegetarian and hot' specially for me - a roast veg filo pastry with parsley cream sauce and the aforementioned veg - and it was beautiful!

It's a nice building but that's really the only good thing I can say about our experience. The groups food came out spilt so one table was just starting when the others had finished. A number of plates came out with cold food and had to be sent back. Free drinks were given to help with the times but then two of the plates came back out cold for a 2nd time! The food was ok but nothing mind blowing, was hoping for a lot more, doubt I will ever go back

First time in Cambridge Googled best Sunday lunch in Cambridge and the chophouse came up. We hadn’t booked a table and dropping in at 1pm on a Sunday was risky. There were no tables available but the manager said he would fit us at 3pm. We returned and received a warm welcome. The service was fantastic and the food was amazing. I would recommend this fantastic place to anyone. Thank you to all the staff who made us feel so welcome.

This is the second year running that we held our club's annual dinner at the St John's Chophouse.
The quality of dishes is excellent and the price is very reasonable. I myself enjoyed the roast of the day and sticky toffee pudding.
The staff, too, were excellent and very knowledgeable in their recommendations of drinks.
We'll be back again next year that's for sure.

We are surprised by all the positive reviews for St. John's Chophouse. We ordered from the early bird menu and were not impressed with our food. The pork loin was hard and very dry. When we ordered 'a glass of wine', we got served and charged a double glass of wine because our waiter had 'assumed that we wanted a large glass'. Seriously? No apology whatsoever.

We had the soup of the day (delicious) and the Ham Hock to share. Cooked to perfection. Couldn't stay for dessert as our movie was about to start (poor planning on our part). Service was good, ambience okay, looked clean enough. It's in Cambridge so parking is an issue, don't hold it against them, walk, cycle or take the bus. Dinner for two: £35

Party of 17- starters were very tasty, however mains were unacceptable for the cost, cold and incorrectly cooked steaks, 6 people didn't receive food until after the rest of the party had eaten, and 1 person was completely forgotten after 5 steaks had to be returned to be heated.

I only give this restaurant four starts because the service is really good. I found the food quite poor, possible because I had a vegetarian main disk. It was advertised as a pumpkin roast, but the reality was that it had a small piece of pumpkin with over-cooked vegetables.

Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff with an excellent selection of meats on the menu. Delicious food all round and a great place to eat out in Cambridge. Worth noting the price reflects the more upmarket nature of the restaurant, but it's worth it!

Had a lovely evening meal with work colleagues. Good selection of beer and wines. We all had various types of steaks which were first brought to us at the table on a large wooden board whilst the waiter explained each one. Would definitely go again.

Very friendly service, great food and pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. We had the set 3-course menu - definitely recommended for value for money! Within easy walking distance of the city centre, but far enough out to avoid most of the tourist crowd.

Reservation was muddled and not enough seats allocated. Food was mediocre and cold on arrival. Meat was overcooked, rubbery and not seasoned well. I would not go back, especially as the beer on offer is bland and overpriced for what it is.

Went on a Sunday night so it was pretty relaxed. The service was attentive. I had the roast duck leg which was delicious and not overcooked and the dessert ice cream with the special flavours were amazing.

Set menu is good, with the soup component being awesome...I would go to this place for just having the soup...Chicken supreme is a lovely main course...I like the food...

Lovely food, well cooked and presented. Good service on a busy night.
Probably better than usual prices for Cambridge (ie good value for money for Cambridge centre)

The best place for lamb! I love it here whether it be for Sunday lunch or dinner for too in one of the cosy upstairs rooms. Great food & great atmosphere too.

Well worth a visit for a good Sunday roast, though perhaps a bit on the pricey side for what you get. Order some pork cracking - you won't regret it!

Very good steak and wine choices but the starters we had, and other main courses were deeply disappointing and very slow service despite a quiet evening.

Came here for Sunday roast on a rainy Cambridge day. The food and the wine were amazing! Staff is very friendly. Great place to enjoy a Sunday afternoon.

Good food, beer and wine. Met up with some old university friends here and thoroughly enjoyed the food, with good sized portions and good quality meat.

Popped in for a drink. Had a pint of the Hophead. Advertised as a light golden beer with zesty hops.
More like a pint of lavender water. Vile stuff

Somewhat average restaurant (the cooking is pretty mediocre). The staff are fine but not that great and it is slightly too expensive for what it is.

Work Christmas dinner. Great service. Lovely food and great portion sizes. Cosy restaurant with lovely log fire in the bar. Highly recommended

Good cuts of meat here. Not cheap, so suitable for a special occasion. Bring a big appetite and leave the vegetarians at home
