Went for a spa day with my best friend last week and it was amazing. We used to do our spa days at another place in Colchester but that has since changed hands so we thought we would try somewhere new and we are so glad we did.

On arrival we went to reception and were given directions to the spa. Spa staff were very friendly. She showed us to the table reserved for us for the day and explained various things to us whilst we enjoyed our complementary coffee.

The whole spa/pool area is fully equipped but is smaller than the other place we used to go, giving it a rather nice feel. Because the whole spa side is on a smaller scale, to me it felt like there's more a personal touch and not as snobby and pretentious as the other place (don't get me wrong, I really liked the other place before too). My best friend agreed with me and said she preferred the relaxing atmosphere here at Stoke by Nayland. Not having to fight for a sun lounger was also a bonus.

We opted for the Rasul Mud Therapy as the treatment for our destress package and it was a lovely experience. There were different muds of different degrees of exfoliation for the face, chest, arms, tummy, legs, back and hands/feet and we had fun applying the muds. We were then shown to the steam room which got progressively hotter for 20 minutes then the shower above our seats came on and we were able to wash the mud away. The only problem we found was as the steam room got hotter and we started to sweat more, the mud on our faces would start dripping down and we ended up 'eating' it when we talk. I suppose we could just stop talking but we are 2 busy mums wanting to make the most of being able to catch up without kiddies butting in every 10 seconds . After rinsing off the mud we were able to put a lovely body oil all over our body and let it sink in whilst we enjoyed our lunch.

We opted to pay extra to add an extra course to our meal. We both had grilled halloumi for starters and the meat platter for our main course, which was a very generous portion, with a full basket of warm bread on the side too. For pudding, my friend had the baked cheesecake which was very nice whilst I had the chocolate brownie. My brownie was a little too sweet for me but I still enjoyed it.

After lunch we went back to the spa/pool area to enjoy the facilities before relaxing on the sun loungers. It was such a lovely relaxing day. It is worth noting that on our visit the swimming pool was open to children from around 4pm. Didn't bother me but some may notice an increase in noise.

All in all we had an amazing day and hopefully it won't be too long before my husband treats me to another spa day here at Stoke by Nayland

This hotel has a nice setting, but they charge quite a lot for a room overnight - this is not a problem as I don't mind paying for top quality service however this hotel lets down in so many ways.

I expect when I pay nearly £200 for an overnight stay that nothing is too much of a problem, that I am special to the hotel and that they value my business.

However faults include:

Not being told check out was 11am when booking a spa treatment for 10.30am - meaning we had no where to go between the treatment and lunch which was booked for 12pm

The lunch which was booked for 12pm after 30 minutes of having to float around the hotel was not possible as the restaurant doesn't open until 12.30pm !!

Poorly maintained room - TV didn't work properly, shower was awful, no bedside cabinet

Breakfast was awful - cost £24 and then a further £7 delivery, tea tasted like an ashtray and fruit bowl was basically 1 chopped apple, no condiments (again you don't mind paying top price, but expect a top class breakfast)

Refused entry to our friends 2 year old child who has downs syndrome into the pool as it was before 5pm - no mention of this when booking and our friends child uses swimming as a form of physio therapy - despite a request for a bit of flexibility as the pool was empty the request was denied.

When checking out the member of staff asked if I enjoyed my stay, I replied not really we had a number of issue... his response 'no problem sir, we hope to see you again'...... no questions as to what my issues were, no attempt to rectify, nothing

To summarize this is a hotel with potential - the setting, spa, gym and restaurant are all very nice. But they are billing themselves as a top class hotel... but unfortunately have a premier Inn mentality.

After searching many venues throughout Essex and Suffolk we decided that Stoke by Nayland offered us what we wanted for our special occasion.
First impressions always count, and that is what Stoke by Nayland offered , stunning grounds , options of rooms for the ceremony and the superb setting for the wedding breakfast and accommodation for our guests.
After a lot of deliberation in July of 2013 we decided to book our wedding on Sunday 3rd November 2013 at Stoke by Nayland.
From then on everything just went so smoothly , nothing was too much trouble for our wedding coordinator appointed by Stoke by Nayland and the staff.
The evening before our wedding we stayed and from then on it was just such a relaxed enjoyable experience that was made by all of the staff. We can honestly say that we had expected something to go wrong and it just didn’t.
If you are considering a wedding at Stoke by Nayland definitely take a look, if it’s not exactly what you want ask them to change it . They will.

Elder daughters wedding and reception. Jake was our dedicated host and was brilliant throughout. As Father of the Bride I was justifiably proud and everything went smoothly.

The ambience of the venue was just right for this special occasion.

With a diverse range of dietary requirements to cater for, the food was very good and as far as we are aware everybody needs were catered for.

The only thing I would suggest for management review is the booking/check in procedure. As a corporate traveller I have stayed at some fantastic hotels and enjoyed platinum card benefits. Giving credit card details to make the booking then presenting the card at check in and then presenting the card again at departure did seem a bit antiquated compared with what I am used to elsewhere. Having said that they have been as a corporate guest and I suppose that they may have a different value to the hotel versus us being there holding a wedding celebration.

We stayed here for two nights between Christmas and New Year 2017. We had to buy two rooms as we are a family of 5. We played golf, used the Spa facilities and dined in the Restaurant both nights we were there. I really do not know where to start - From the moment we walked in we were greeted at Reception and made to feel extremely welcome and nothing was too much trouble. (we were hoping that we had adjoining rooms or at least rooms on the same floor, but unfortunately there was a slight oversight with this. This was not a major problem for us, however my wife received an upgraded room to a suite which was amazing !!) The food in the restaurant was exceptional both nights we ate there. 'Hugo' and 'Gio' were just fantastic with us and our children and made the visit very special for us. We enjoyed the whole experience so much we have already booked to visit again in April.
Well done SbN ! We can't wait to see you again !

My wife and I were married in the Garden and Gainsborough rooms at this wonderful Hotel on Thursday 12th June 2014. We had approx 40 main guests and 30 extra friends in the evening. Family and friends stayed overnight and booked all of the allocated 15 rooms. It was a perfect day and I would highly recommend this venue. Everyone told us they were very impressed by the location, service, food quality and standard of rooms and facilities. The wedding flowed seamlessly throughout the day and glorious weather was a bonus. Special thanks to Debbie Hynard who completed the arrangement of the wedding and to Becky the Duty Manager who was with us to ensure all our needs and concerns were met during the day. We investigated many local venues but this Hotel 'had everything' in one place at a very reasonable price. If you are not looking for a church wedding then in our opinion you would struggle to find anything better...perfect!

We stayed at one of the lodges for 2 nights as a group of 10 for a hen party. The lodge itself was lovely. It was spacious with everything we needed for the weekend (apart from bin liners) as was the spa. Unfortunately, the organisation at the lodge and spa seemed to be pretty bad. None of the staff seemed to know the answers to any of the questions we asked and our spa appointments were moved without our knowledge. When we told them our appointments were wrong, we didn't get an apology and were just told it must have been a mistake. We also contacted them several times before our stay to ask if we would be able to go in a little earlier than check in to decorate before the Bride-to-be got there but we were told they didn't know if we could each time. All in all, it was lovely accommodation with a really nice (albeit busy) spa which I would definitely recommend, it's just a shame that the organisation was so bad.

The rooms are very nice and clean and the staff are very accommodating. My wife and I actually requested a room change, at no fault of the hotels, we wanted a nicer view. The hotel wet more than happy to change our room. We paid an extra £20 for the upgrade and had a much nicer experience. Much nicer view over looking the lake.

Regarding improvements, I feel a refrigerator would be a nice addition to the room as well as air conditioning; or at least windows that open further. Also if the cheaper food option would stay open longer so that we can have dinner later without going for the fine dining option. Overall it was a lovely experience and I would definitely return. I would only choose the one night next time because once you've used the spa facilities, you've pretty much done everything. Unless you partake in the golfing activities.

We recently attended for a family wedding ( 25 the November ). This is a large, busy hotel with a fantastic atmosphere. Along with our function there were other events going on and the service was top notch.
we ate in the restaurant on Friday evening and the food is quite simply perfection! the staff are a happy team who genuinely seem to love their jobs and customers. They are all professional, courteous and fun. We ate breakfast on the Saturday morning of the wedding and some of the staff were back again! The breakfast was exceptional and plentiful and top quality. Our wedding meal and buffet ran like clockwork and the food again was out of this world. Our rooms were huge and very clean and lovely comfortable beds. I really cannot praise this hotel enough and we will be back for a relaxing weekend in 2018. Well done everyone!

My husband and I stayed here for three nights. On the third night the fire alarm went off. Thankfully, there was no fire and thank goodness for that - the staff seemed to have no idea what they were doing, a fire door from the upstairs bedrooms was blocked off by chairs, there were no staff in the car park checking that people were out of the hotel and when after the first all clear was given and the alarm went off on a second occasion the hotel was not completely evacuated . To compound matters we received absolutely no apology from the day staff on departure . Leaving that aside our room was tired to say the least and the dining room menu overpriced . The food certainly did not live up to the description in the menu - overall it was bland. The staff were pleasant and obliging and the views stunning from dining room .

Big hotel in beautiful setting. Very nice large rooms, comfy beds and quiet.
In the Lakes restaurant my food was extremely expensive for poor quantity on plate, and it was a noisy room! Bar bistro menu has better prices for reasonable portions but many tables have low seating so could be uncomfortable to eat. Elderly guests could struggle to get up and down. Breakfast is standard but unfortunately lacked a 'Smoked Haddock & poached eggs' option which, for a hotel of this standard is very poor show!
Swimming pool very nice with easy access and good decor. Can't comment on golf facilities as am not a golfer but guests looked to be having a great time!
Pippins on-site shop very well stocked with quality items.
Overall, a good place to stay if getting a special deal.

We got married in May last year and had our wedding reception at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa. We fell in love of the venue itself as well as the area surrounding the hotel when we saw it for the first time. It definitely exceeded our expectation as the staff were fantastic and well organized, taking care of every single detail to make our special day running smoothly. The food was excellent with lots of choices to accommodate our request. We enjoyed our night stay in the Tamara suite accompanied by flowers, champagne and a lovely card from the staff. Everyone had a great time and people are still telling us how great our wedding was. We would definitely recommend this beautiful place to everyone for their special day. Enzo & Rosa

We held our wedding reception at Stoke By Nayland and they made our day the best that it could be. They accommodated our every need (I am dairy intolerant and my wife is vegan!) The manner in which we were looked after from the day we entered the building to view with a mind of booking our wedding reception to leaving the morning after was superb. We honestly could not wish for a better day. The duty manager we had made the day go smoothly and worked well with our photographer. She made us feel comfortable and made us feel like we didn't need to worry about anything. I would strongly recommend the venue for weddings. It deserves more than the stars that it has...

The location was absolutely stunning, boasting picturesque views from many of the restaurant/bars and terraces. The rooms were adequate but not well air conditioned so it felt uncomfortably warm sometimes. The food offered in the main restaurant was on the expensive side but fine if you have the money to spend. The spa was beautiful and well kept as well as the toilets situated downstairs. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. When we arrived, we had to request an upgrade because our first room had a view of the car park and a really squeaky toilet. However, my overall experience of the hotel was very nice for a two night stay.

We held our evening reception at Stoke golf club and I couldn't fault it at all.
Right from the start the team were so helpful and attentive it was so lovely.
The room set up for the evening was amazing, set out so beautifully and everything I wanted!
Nothing was too much effort for the team both front of house and behind the scenes.
The views from the reception room were stunning, which meant we had some lovely photos at venue.
The food and drink were of a very high standard and couldn't be faulted.
A wedding at Stoke is a must!

Stayed at Stoke by Nayland for 3 nights at the beginning of August. Couldn't recommend it enough. Special mention should go to Lee the porter. He went out of his way to help us with any issues we had and just a generally helpful and friendly guy. Lodges have everything you need and are only a short taxi ride to Colchester town centre if you choose to venture out. Facilities at Stoke by nayland spa are also great. Unfortunately we didn't use them enough we were having too much of a good time in the lodge! Can't wait to go back soon.

Played both courses last weekend in blisteringly hot weather and enjoyed them both.
Both courses are well layed out and a good challenge. Greens were a bit slow and the grass on the tees was a bit long but overall I thought the courses were great.
The accommodation was excellent and the food was tasty.
The whole weekend was also good value for money, even the drink prices were reasonable.
If you want a round of golf or just a nice place to stay in a beautiful part of the country pay Stoke by Nayland a visit.

The Hotel comes with a lovely view onto the golf course and the staff is very friendly and attentive. The à la carte food was elaboratly arranged on the plate and a true pleasure for the eye. The deserts were absolutely delicious and I strongly recommend the sorbet. Unfortunately the food from the buffet was not as top noch as the rest. The rost was slightly dry and a bit too thinly sliced. The rost potatoes were very dry and the vegetables slightly undercooked. Therefore only four stars for this location.

My wife and I stayed at the Stoke by Nayland Hotel for three nights. It has a decent gym and pool with Spa facilities. The rooms and Hotel itself are starting to look a little tired. Our bath was rusty and had been badly patched up. The furniture was also looking ragged around the edges although the bed itself was comfortable. Our stay was somewhat spoiled by rowdy idiotic guests banging on our door at midnight. My wife and I couldn't get back to sleep afterwards.

Stayed overnight for a golf outing. Played the Constable course on the Sunday and have to say that the course was in pretty poor condition. Greens were largely bare and had ruts and lumps. The room however (a twin) was well kept, clean and roomy. The following day, after a tasty buffet cooked brekkie we played the second course. Vast improvement over the Constable course with smoother greens. I'd come back and play, but would likely avoid the constable course...

When you go for a spa day, you assume that you will have a quiet and relaxing day, however this wasn't the case with Stoke by Nayland Spa. It was very noisy at the pool/jacuzzi relax area because there were lots of children between 5-7 pm. Other than that, everything else was brilliant, the room and restaurant were luxurious and the staff very helpful. Would have given a 5 star review if it wasnt for the extreme noise level at the pool/jacuzzi relax area.

Beautiful location beautiful views. However, not always possible to just stroll around and enjoy them as guests are playing golf so you may get hit! Stayed in a standard double club room. Room needed a little attention here and there. But generally a very pleasant experince. Didn't use to spa so can't comment. Breakfast was good nice selection of cereals and pastries. Plus hot breakfast. Staff were fab arranged for vegetarian sausages for us.

I visited for a wedding. The whole day was fantastic and the venue has every angle covered. The location itself was very picturesque, the decorations and effort put into organising the day was amazing. The rooms were great, very comfortable beds and it was nice to have a decent shower in the room. The staff made every effort to ensure everyone was catered for and wanted for nothing. I would certainly consider this venue for any functions of my own.

We had a two night stay at the hotel. The staff are very friendly but aside the spa facilities there's not much to do. Going for a walk is not
possible as people are playing golf. The rooms need fridges. One annoying thing is the single beds joint together to make a double I found that quite cheeky considering it was a booked double from the beginning. It was a very nice break for us but not sure if we will go there again to be honest.

Stayed overnight and played both golf courses over two days. Constable course is not worth it at all as greens aren't the best but other course is ace. Hotel staff couldn't do enough for us and facilities are great, used the gym and pool. Best stocked bar full of spirits I've seen in a while and reasonably priced considering you would expect hotel prices. Good selection of ales, lagers and ciders. Overall a very enjoyable stay.

Nice large room, relaxing spa break. Good facilities and a very well kitted out gym. We had the most superb meal at the restaurant. The chips that come with the steak are out this world and the bacon doughnut needs to be tried to be believed. The staff and service at the hotel are excellent and Mike from the restaurant made us feel very welcome and valued as guests. Thanks for a superb break. Looking forward to a return in the future.

Visited today for Sunday lunch as we explained to restaurant manager food was good (except for the tomato soup which you could stand your spoon up in) but service was very bad so many staff but organized chaos!! No one came up during meal to ask if all was Ok! Customers had to queue at the fridge to get dessert! Cold meat! Lucky we don't mind cold meat but many people like it hot could be very nice if you got more organized

I feel relaxed from the minute I check in, the surroundings are beautiful. I go just to relax and catch up with my friend, we stay by the pool and swim and read and snooze! Friendly staff. Nice touch with kettles in the room. I had a car park view this time which wasn't as nice as my previous ones with a golf view. Breakfast is fantastic with an amazing view. Dinner is also excellent. I am coming back this weekend! ☺

Our visit is always looked forward greatly by our golfing party.Whilst our primary purpose is to use the wonderful golf courses we find that all the services provided 'tick all our boxes'. We cannot find any fault and our only concern is the growing wonderful reputation may mean too many visitors in due course impact on services provided.
Already planning next years visit and possible expansion in party size.

Received a groupon voucher for this place. Phoned up to book, no answer for 2 days. Finally got through only to be told you have to book it through groupon. Tried booking through groupon, long story short, 3 days later coupon won’t work, availability gone, whole experience-very frustrating. Can only assume they make it this complicated so that people give up and don’t redeem their vouchers. Free money for groupon.
