The Olive Tree Restaurant, The Ramada Hotel, Dover.
Lunch: Weds 18th May 2016

A hotel of fine standing and providing quality to customers, although hosting a corporate aimed service.

On approach the outside looked no different to that of a standard travel lodge, although was surrounded by small gardens, so alittle more appealing to the eye, plenty of parking.
Accessing the building was particulary awkward with a pushchair, with a mix of heavy doors and automatic doors.

We booked a table through the online booking service on this occassion, we don't believe the welcome would of differed had we not booked.

We were briefly welcomed by the receptionist, after stating we would like to dine in the hotel restaurant, she pointed us in the direction we needed to go and stated for us to seat ourselves, which we did.
With dark carpet, dark tables, sparkling glasses, shiny cutlery and white linen, it was a mix of contemporary fine dining decor and a conference room, which lacked welcome with wine bottle racks on the glass walls and the entrance hosting a grand piano, proved a real mix of styles.
There was a booking desk on entry, but no-one manning the desk, so we chose our own table and waited.
After 5 or so minutes a waitress stopped at our table as she walked through and checked that we wished to eat lunch, silly question.

We were served reasonably quickly, she asked if we had a Groupon voucher, which we didn't, but soon became clear from other diners that followed that its the 'done' thing at The Ramada.

The food was beautifully presented, however the steak was a very cheap and fatty cut. We chose from the main menu, as the set lunch menu wasn't to our taste. However the food was of good quality(not the steak) and reasonably priced.

For a whole hour, having turned up just after midday, we had the whole restaurant to ourselves, which was surreal. There was no atmopshere set, no music, just silence other than our own voices, which made for an awkward dining experience.

The restaurant is clearly used for breakfasts for residents of the hotel, with all the equipment still out on display, perhaps the restaurant in the daytime is an after thought as fewer residents require this facility.

The staff came over as friendly, but with a distracted presence, the hotel is clearly under staffed, or so it seemed on this occasion.

The hotel hosts a Costa coffee franchise, as coffee lovers this boosted our spirits, jumping into a well made layered latte was pure lush.

The toilets were outstandingly clean, disabled access and baby changing facilities were good.
A lovely lounge area ajacent to the restaurant, to enjoy coffee and cake as an alternative, which we may try on another occassion, would be suitable for a meeting place.

The Olive Tree Restaurant, an awkward dining experience on a weekday lunch time, lack of atmosphere, but well priced and quality of food.
Great to grab a quick bite to eat and the setting providing opportunity the stay all afternoon should you have the time, just lacks that focus for lunch time diners.

We went here for Christmas lunch and was so disappointed . On arrival the reception staff asked where we were eating in the restaurant or marquis , for nearly £70 per head we believed it would be in the restaurant ( we had not been told there was a choice and where led to believe at the time of booking it was in the restaurant ) a member of staff told us to go to the bar ‘someone will sort you out there ‘ .
We then found that we would be eating in a tent with 230 other people . The waiting staff on arrival just stood there no welcome what’s so ever , we had to find where we were sitting ourselves . The enormity of people inside was quite overwhelming , there was no order in getting food you had to que as you would in a busy canteen , then once you had your food trying to get back to your table was redicullous . We asked for our table to be cleared 7/8 times so we could get our next course for the staff ( especially the blonde girls ) to completely ignor you . We had to clear our selves putting some bits on the floor and on a near by high chair ( the mess was still there when we left ). The crackers on the table fell apart and were so cheap and nasty , the food was ok , I’m lactose intolerant and had made the restaurant aware of this the week before and was assured I would be given separate food , there was nothing ! I had to eat what was there and was then very poorly for the next 24hrs .
There was supposed to be live music , they turned up 2 hours after the lunch started , Father Christmas was also promised and again a huge disappointment . The rest of my table of 13 left very disappointed after we had been so looking forward to this special family day .
As a gesture of good will I was offered afternoon tea for 2 ! What about the other 11 people ? .
This is not the first time the Ramada has let us down , we went for afternoon tea earlier in the year and was made to feel very unwelcome by the staff .
The organisation at this hotel needs sorting and a close look at the staff you employ .
I would not recommend this place to anyone .

Although the evening staff was very helpful, what was to follow is the reasoning for one star. The shower had mold, the tub had a dirt film. The other guest were very loud through out the night , even setting off the fire alarm at 1 am. When asking them to quite down a bit, I was met with very rude comments. They were very intoxicated and seem to be high. When call the front desk I was told there's not much they could do. So for the rest of the night we were woken up by loud knocking on the door, even once on our door since they forgot what room they were in. The bathrooms need a vent of some sorts. When taking a shower it steams up to the point you cannot see. Then when opening the door the fire alarm goes off. Thankfully we were able to open the room windows to have the alarm turn off quickly. It was nice that the staff came and check to make sure everything was ok. The worst part was waking from up seeing dried blood in the bed! I checked my husband to make sure he wasn't bleeding, he wasn't! But they don't have wash clothes because it's unsanitary?! So it's ok to not check to see if the sheets are clean?! Needless to say we will never be back.

We had the unfortunate experience of having Christmas lunch here. We had booked earlier in the year with the expectation of having Christmas lunch in a restaurant. When we arrived and bought a round of drinks at the extortionate price of £16.16 for 1 pint of beer, 1 glass of wine and 2 diet cokes, we were hearded into a marquee. This was not explained at time of booking as having an autistic child with us, we would not have booked here. The food was all set out on a buffet table which was a free for all with 220 other guests. The Ramada had packed way too many people in the marquee and many of the poor families had hundreds of people squeezing between tables to get back with their food. The handful of staff they did have to clear tables were not keeping up with clearing tables for so many guests. Plates were being stacked on the floor so people could get their next course. The whole experience was poor and it was quite obvious the Ramada were out to make as much money as possible rather than cater properly for the guests. On the plus side the food was nice. Overall very very poor

Concierge who greeted us and gave us our room key was very courteous, polite and charming. Very pleasant welcome, and future interactions with him showed he remembered our names and room number. Very good service. The room was a standard sized double room with a very comfy mattress and complimentary tea and coffee making facilities. The kettle takes a while to boil. Only one set of towels was. provided even though a note in the bathroom says there are two sets. Shower head was very small, took a while to wash properly in it. There was a hairdryer provided in our room. The free WiFi is reliable and has a good speed for most standard web browsing and smartphone features. I do not recommend the restaurant on site, The Olive Tree. I didn't want to tarnish the name of the hotel as we enjoyed every aspect of it apart from this. See my review of The Olive Tree separately. All in all I would stay again!

Chef had a very bad evening when restaurant was not even full. Four well over cooked meals out of six. Two steaks went back black when they were ordered as rare and medium rare and two pork bellies should have gone back as also black but we had waited too long for the other meals. Ended up eating 3 sets of meals out of synch and rushing at the end to get our prebooked taxi. Disappointing main meals as a steak should be the easiest thing to cook but these had obviously been left in the pan. Shame really. I think the chef will be out of a job if they continue like that. Starters were fine and sweets ok. Veg and fries also ok. We had a fab meal last year here but standard has dropped dramatically.

Great disapointment. The receptionst screw up everything she could. We had a reservation of two single rooms (already paid) made by the third part. At first she wanted to pay it again because she wasn't able to find the payment. Solved. But we received just one shared room. We showed her a confirmation letter about booking of two separate rooms but she didn't care. And than she wanted to register a credit card due the minibar that wasn't in the room. Rejected. To make long story short: room wasn't cleaned during the next day, ants in the room and equipment heavily worn at the edges.

Update: +1 star for good breakfast

The Ramada hotel looks to be an older hotel that is in need of updating. The staff are friendly enough and the rooms are quiet however, the decor is old and shabby and with stains on the walls, toilet seats not sat correctly on the porcelain and scratched and dented walls, it really let's it self down. If I am staying in an executive room then I expect something more than an espresso machine from a company I have never heard of. The food was not tastes as it seemed far too overpriced for what you get and also for the state of the hotel in general. If the hotel was brought upto standard then I feel this could easily warrant more stars.

Afternoon tea here via Groupon. A good selection of sandwiches and cakes. Had to prompt the waitress to bring extra spoons, tea, milk and at the end goody bags to take away what we didn't eat. Not as attentive as could be but it was busy and there were only two of them. Perhaps more staff need to be in this area at peak times. The public area's of the hotel seem to be tidy and well kept from what we saw of it with a couple of bars and conference area's. The hotel will make a good overnight stay before travelling via the ferry abroad or coming back to the UK plus there are some fine tourist attractions nearby to take in.

Well signposted easy to find.Perfect privacy yet all the facilities. We were greeted in style by Stella the front of house person and allocated a room with a wet room so bathing became a pleasure for a disabled person. Lovely room great sleep comfort mattress.Adjacent to restaurant and bar. Sat in restaurant a bit worried as it seemed everyone in there had ordered at same time. Great service and in no time we were eating a Hunter chicken roas-t beady eyes had spotted apple crumble cheesecake-two desserts in one!! Then next morning the breakfast buffet with a trad English breakfast sublime. We left without eating Easter eggs.!!

Our stay at the Ramada was for one night and overall very pleasant. Good service and value, room was clean and had all the facilities. There was a slight hiccup with the room card but was soon resolved. We also dined at the in house restaurant, three course dinner. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. There was also amole parking. Whilst the location isn't quite in Dover, the white cliffs were a 10 minute drive. Wouldn't hesitate in returning to the Ramada or recommending.

We turned up as a party of 7 without a lunch reservation on a Sunday afternoon. The restaurant seemed to be near closing, but they accommodated us. The food was very tasty. The chef took time to cook us fresh steak, which was perfectly well done. The staff didn't rush us, they allowed us to take our time, eat and enjoy.our Sunday afternoon with each other. We're sure glad we located this hidden gem. We'll be back, maybe for an overnight stay next time.

Nice standard hotel for this rating. The food was good and the staff friendly. Had to move rooms as mine was not cleaned after the 2nd Night, I had been working in the room during the morning so had the do not disturb sign up. I changed the to please make up the room at 1200 but returned at 1600 to find the room untouched and was advised the cleaning staff had left, hence was moved to another room. Other than that a pleasant stay.

Great customer service! Very friendly and the room was great. Comfortable bed & free tea/coffee facilities. Though, our bathroom has some mould on the roof. Also, we had some very loud neighbours, who didn't really care about people trying to sleep. I know the hotel can't really do anything about it, and that wasn't their fault but it may just give you an idea of what the hotel is like...

A regular stop over for us, and the staff are always friendly and remember their regular customers. Food in the bar and restaurant is good, and breakfast is also varied. Despite it being next to the A2/M2 it's nice and quiet, and I get a good night's sleep. Rooms could do with an update, as the decor is not contemporary, but it's a minor quibble, as they're clean and tidy.

We had never been there before so we were a little apprehensive about dining in a hotel. We had a wonderful three course meal, cooked to perfection. The portions were generous and beautifully laid out on the plates. Apart from the food (and the decor) the other high point of the evening was the excellent service - very friendly and most efficient. We will definitely be returning!

The worst experience in my life!!! The staff dosn't smile and greets!!! Dirty rooms. They didn't clean the toilet!!! Can you imagine. LllBad breakfast. Please be careful, they charge you more for your second breakfast because they say 'we only have 1 breakfast confirmation' even though you a room for 2 adults. Far from Dover. My stay was a nightmare!!!

We held our annual group Sunday lunch here for the second year in succession, and have also eaten as a couple. There were no complaints.
The restaurant is very popular as the carvery provides a selection of meats and comprehensive choice of vegetables. Starters and desserts also provide a varied assortment to choose from. Good car parking.

Had high expectations of this hotel, but badly let down by the quality of the room.
Apparently they have some refurbished rooms and some older rooms; I got an old one and it was not good. The breakfast was very nice and the staff where very friendly but I won't be staying here again unless all their rooms are refurbished.

I went to a family party that was a carvery meal to celebrate a golden wedding. The food was excellent and the staff warm and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble and this made the whole event an enjoyable experience. It is easy to get to with good parking. The areas I saw were smart, clean and comfortable.

We booked a party of 11 for the set lunch menu. The food was not up to standard and there was a very long wait between courses. Had the restaurant been busy this could have been understood, but there were only two other diners. I was looking forward to the meal, but I was sadly disappointed and will not be returning.

Very friendly staff. Had my husband's birthday dinner with my family on 17th October . We had our table decorated beautifully with some glitters. Food served hot and very delicious. Will definitely go back again. Restaurant very very clean. Staff very smart. Keep it up.

Great location ten minutes from the port. Decent sized family room, easy check in and good car parking. On the negative side, bed quite hard, bathroom tiny and although clean on the surface, we made the mistake of looking under the bed! Would stay again for a one night stop over

Came for a business breakfast, fair enough it's all you can eat buffet fayre but my god it was expensive, possibly the most expensive breakfast I've ever had!

Food was ok but I won't eat here again purely due to price.

Went for the Christmas dinner, food was mostly cold, dry, waited the entire dinner and no one brought us drinks. Ended up going to the bar myself to get them. My grandparents booked in advance, we won't be going back next year.

Rude staff, not welcoming, not interested when you asked a question, woman on reception took my phone out my hand to check booking with out asking, other receptionist as bad, she made a remark as we had a reduced rate room....

It's ok, staff are a little 'detached' but the rooms are reasonable and the breakfast is fantastic. The food in the restaurant in the evening was nice but service was slow due to understaffing? I would go back.

It was pretty alright for an over night stay . Cheap ish . Had a mini gym as well. Room was quite small tho. Overall wasnt too bad . Could be better tho . The breakfast options wasn't that much for 12.5 per person.

Although it's a Ramada Hotel it is actually part of the Leaf hotel franchise and personally it needs updating. I found that premier Inn is probably a better room quality than here. Disappointed for the price....

This is a good stay for a low price near Dover ferry port, rooms are clean but have no air con, free parking also is available. There is a good selection of restaurants and shops within 5 minutes driving time.
