Not a good experience which was a shame as the pub is really nice. I had booked online for a table for 2 at 830 when I arrived the table was not ready. We there asked to wait at the bar and they would call us. We tried to get a drink which the bar was not that busy but took forever. We then had to ask again about our table at to which point she said she needed to speak to the manager. We understand that other diners don't finish on time but they could have updated us on what was happening we had to keep asking. Then service was OK so when we ordered coffee and tea it was a different type of tea percolator but no explanation on how to use it which led to my cup over flowing and falling onto my cousins jeans. There was no apology throughout . I definitely tip well when I get good service but sed8netly did not receive that today. Won't be back in a hurry.

Recently refurbished, we went for lunch as it is conveniently located for all 3 of us and just off the M25.
Met at the door and shown to our table, the decor is beautiful and tastefully done and in fact we all commentated on how lovely it looked.
Extensive menu with an extra specials menu also available. Three of us all chose different starters and mains and couldn't fault the food, it was filling and delicious. The fish dishes were especially tasty.
The staff were friendly, attentive and we weren't rushed at all. The pricing of dishes is about average for any gastro pub or restaurant and happy to pay that for good food & ambience.
All in all, we were more than happy with our choice and would recommend to anyone nearby or passing.

The setting and staff are friendly. The Manager could do with help on friendliness, but overall it has good people. The lady from the Dominican was especially helpful and friendly. The decor and setting is nice and clean, with a modern feel. The food However, is really nice. Only tried the Sticky Platter and Duck pate. They were both good for an English pub. The former served warm and with a mint yogurt. The latter served with bread and a lovely onion marmalade. I will go back to try their other dishes. Also really nice children's menu. I think it's been the best so far in the area.

Things have definitely improved immensely here. The menu is less fussy with more varied and interesting options. The choice of a few more ales and well established craft beer also helps.

Service is friendlier and much more prompt too.

Although it's on a busy road, it's just off the common and has a Lovely garden and seating options in and out of pub, also backs onto a really nice part of Chorleywood heritage grounds which trails off into the Chess valley and beyond.

It's now firmly back on the list of fav country pubs in Chorleywood.

The overall look of the place is lovely, but it was very disappointing. Dish I wanted was not available. Had cod and chips with broccoli. Cod was overcooked and was mushy, not flaky, the twice cooked chips were barely cooked once and had lots of black spots in them, and the broccoli was overcooked. I ordered a merlot and it wasn't, though I wasn't charged the merlot price I wasn't informed. One person serving and she didn't seem very happy to be there, couldn't blame her really. Cannot recommend and will not return.

My family and I went to The Gate for Christmas day lunch and whilst the atmosphere and service were fantastic the food did leave a lot to be desired. I really wish chefs would actually cook vegetables properly and not just show a pan of boiling water to the veg for 30 secs. The brussel sprouts were inedible and the cost of £80 was not worth it at all. Having been to the Gate on a number of occasions the quality of the food has been going down hill rapidly over the last couple of years which is a great shame.

I like this pub, nice selection of drinks, food is good too

I like the atmosphere, the staff friendly, the service is good, however we did order cookies and ice cream and we got brownie and ice cream, but when I questioned it, a member of staff said we have run out of cookies, I personally didn't like the kitchen behaviour... Should ask the customers if they would like replacement.

However other than that I do like the place

What's happened to this place ??
Went yesterday lunchtime to meet with friends . Service appalling, to the point where you had to go find a waiter to come and take our orders and still didn't turn up . So went to pay and the duty manager didn't take on board our complaints and just carried on talking to work colleagues. Never again . Have been going to this pub over 30 years on and off . Will never go again

Mrs day

This always used to be a lovely place to come for a drink and some good food at reasonable prices. Unfortunately tonight it was not up to the usual. Looking a little tired and the food was poor. No camembert, our duck parfait was supposed to come with red onion chutney and ciabatta but instead was an apple/ gooseberry mix and bread. The main course was cool and not the usual standard. A shame !

I quite liked this pub and would come back. I had the burger from the vegan menu but cheated as I got a side of halloumi! The burger was ok but when paired with the tomato and pesto sauce provided it was very good. I also got the sticky toffee pudding which I also enjoyed. The South African house wine was also delicious. As a vegetarian I would recommend trying this place

We called in a few weeks ago after its recent refurbishment. The place looks a lot brighter and there's some new furniture. However whilst there used to be two indoor areas set aside for those wanting a drink, that's now been reduced to one, and given that they've put extra seating in that area it all feels a bit cramped.

The food itself was rather tasty, a picture of my southern fried chicken is included below.

However the service was subpar, while the staff were friendly and polite, the food took far too long the reach the table and when it did, some side orders were missing because the chef had forgotten them.

Having lived very close to The Gate for over a decade I can say that, on the whole, my experience has been a good one. It does very much depend on the staff, so at the moment (2018) it’s on a high! Good food, nice ambience, not too pricey!

Staff is a bit slow on cleaning up the tables. Dirty dishes and plates in the pub area stay on the tables for hours.
Probably not like that in the restaurant area.

Otherwise lovely decorated, very cozy and nicely lit place.

It was not open when we went in and is being refurbished. We were told it is not reopening until Saturday but we were given a voucher for £10 off. So we shall see what it is like. We went to the The White Hart for a lovely meal.

Food was ok, little taste to the fishcakes, be prepared starters are very small. Had squid, six small bits for £7.... Side salad served in tiny ramakin with a few leaves and watery dressing.. not worth £55.00 disappointed.

I have a love-hate relationship with this place. The food is OK and the staff are friendly, but only if you can find them. Always run off their feet when we go, so end up taking longer over paying the bill than dining.

Attractive pub with good outdoor seating and a varied menu. They were happy to accommodate a special dietary request and the result was excellent. Love the mini dessert + coffee option. All pubs should do this!

Terrible pint of ale served, but they did replace it. Not enough seating for drinkers, too much for diners.
Went there again and yet another bad pint... cloudy. Downgraded to 2 stars.

Very poor service, waited at the bar for 10 minutes while being ignored by staff. Managed to order food but they brought the wrong order. Ended up walking out, what a shame.

Disappointing meal compared with previous occasions. Waitress unaware of foods chille content. Shared starter was small service slow and inaccurate. OVERALL POOR.

Not the best roast. Soggy roast potatoes. Tough meat. Carrots swimming in butter. Have eaten better there, athough not recently. Nice place but food not to standard.

It took more than an hour and 20 min for the main courses to come. Certainly not suitable for children if you have to keep them entertained and they are hungry.

Very over priced for a pub just off m25
Bar staff did not know what sharaz was then
Said they don't sell it so had to settle for a merlot.

Really nice venue and the food is great, prices reflect the quality of the dishes. Only thing is waiting at the bar for a drink is a little slow.

Food was outstanding. Not overpriced either and staff were a pleasure, will definitely be returning and recommending friends! Lovely atmosphere

The place is ok but the food expensive and not very good, chicken in the salad was so dry , like wood, the replacement chicken took 10 mind...

A lovely well presented pub with plenty of seating and car parking. A good range of food and drink. Smarter than your average traditional pub.
