I am writing this review in disgust at the way the durham marriott hotel has robbed me of 150 pound even though i did not stay at the hotel.my partner and my mother in law stayed there at the weekend i booked the hotel on my card .they arrived back on sunday and 150 pound had been taken from my account when i spoke too the duty manager he told me it was because they had a complaint of smoke coming from there room .my mother in law does not even smoke and my partner only smokes an ecig.they are liars and thieves.i would advise anyone who is planning too stay at this hotel be very careful because even if you dont smoke and the staff smell smoke they will bill your card to the tune of 150 pound which you have no chance of getting back the duty manager nikki is a horrible woman who speaks with a loud nasty tone in her voice.i would not recommend anyone stay at this hotel the staff are obviously paid to go round the hotel like cigarette police smelling out smoke so they can charge you after you have checked out its quite a good scam they have going..the hotel itself was average for the money paid for a two night stay...stay well clear of this hotel.

Booked a room here in Novemeber 2016 for this year's gala in Durham (2017). 21 hours before I was due to check in I received an email telling me that my room was cancelled due to a glitch in there system, over booking the hotel. Despite a lengthy phone call explaining how it was my son's second birthday and a family get together in honour of my recently deceased grandfather who was a stalwart of the gala nothing was rectified and I was 'outsourced' to the nearby radisson. Over the course of the next 12 hours it transpired that the hotel had identified all the members in our party and cancelled there rooms too. As there were not enough rooms in the Radisson for all of us they planned to put some of us in the Marriott in Gateshead. So what was supposed to be a joint celebration of the birth of my firstborn and the memory of a wonderful grandfather turned into a nightmare of stress, anguish and disappointment.

Stayed overnight at the Marriott hotel, Durham. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is well located close to the town. Only a few minutes walk. The rooms were quite dated and the bathroom shower area was a bit grubby with black mould on the silicone and grouting. This is normally expected, but it was a little worse than usual. Bed was comfortable and had a good night's sleep. Only other gripe was the cost of the breakfast, at £16 per person is very steep. However it was rather nice. Plenty of choice and fresh, even later on in the morning. Make it a tenner and I'd be willing to pay. Overall decent stay, rooms just need a refresh. I don't think the location can carry the hotel for much longer.

Arrived at check in and greeted with a lovely smile from the lady behind the desk. We were told we had been upgraded to a suite complimentary! !
This was a wonderful start to our stay and the room had lush view's over the Durham bridge and river.
Room 233.
There was a small Hall entrance after the door opened to a seating area with tea and coffee making facilities. Then this led to a beautiful soft bed....best nights sleep I've had in ages. The bathroom was lovely too with a Jacuzzi bath which was huge!!
The breakfast again was great choices from a cooked breakfast to fresh fruits and breads etc to choose from .
Thanks again for a great stay and room upgrade ~

Stayed there for about a week, and it was a very nice stay overall. The rooms are very comfortable. Although it was extremely hot indoors, the hotel provided fans which helped cool the air down in the evening.

Overall the service was extremely good, in the bar, the restaurant and across the hotel. Staff appeared to be quite attentive to customer requests and access to the leisure club was both easy and free for guests.

Only downside perhaps is the quality of the food at breakfast, which I found to be slightly under par: scrambled eggs were unappealing at best, bacon was quite oily...

Overall, a very pleasant stay in a magnificent city.

The hotel is lovely just like the staff. The rooms match the style of the hotel with dark woods and cosy rooms. We had two double beds a settee and two TV's in the room. My favourite was the breakfast as I love a full English. It was buffet style with lots to choose from. If I had to dig for a negative it was that you are charged £5 a day to park but considering you are bang in the middle of Durham I even thought that was ok. My kids loved the complimentary wifi so they never missed youtube and kept the moaning down to a minimum. Durham is a great place and lovely to visit. Everyone was really friendly. We are booked again for August :-)

I really cannot recommend this Hotel. I did not consider it good value for money. I was surprised by the quality of the 'deluxe' room and bathroom - ie lack of quality. The latter did not smell at all pleasant. The staff on reception were helpful but the staff in the restaurant were rather mixed in terms of their professionalism. The food in the restaurant was mediocre and we paid more for wine than we would in London. There was a good selection for breakfast, probably the best bit about our visit, but we did have to wait a while for a table. The location was also good. However I would not stay here again.

We used the Durham Marriott Royal County Hotel last week for an overnight stay to attend our son's wedding over two days and had a very enjoyable stay there. Our room was very comfortable (a Hypnos mattress on the bed, had a great sleep), the free WiFi very welcome and the spa facilities terrific. Whilst all the staff were pleasant and helpful, special mention must go to Ellen who served us breakfast in the restaurant. She is an asset to the company and a true ambassador for the City and the North East region, adding value to customer service for anyone staying in this hotel.

lovely hotel friendly inviting and awarm welcome.we stayed in room 358 as i had requested a river view .the room was very large with a large 2 seater sofa in the window, a emperier sized bed, just like the ones you get in egypt.the bath room was also very large .shower over the bath which was fine, parking was £5 for the night. centroley located and easly accesible by road , shops bars and restaurants within walking distance ,some of streets were a little steep and on cobbled but fine to walk on .we will be returning next summer

Very warm and friendly staff. Has good facilities with leisure centre, pool, hot tub. It has a business fax and printer. In house restaurant and a pub. Meals are ok. Breakfast is quite an expansive feast if you buy the buffet. Rooms are tidy and house keeping do an excellent job of keeping the room clean and topped up with essentials. No mini bar. In room entertainment included some system to connect your device to the tv to watch your own Netflix etc.

Fantastic place to stay. Facilities are excellent
, staff are wonderful; helpful and knowledgeable, food is excellent - breakfasts are a delight, a marvellous choice from cold to hot food, the cooked breakfast is not greasy/oily, evening meal choice is plentiful and good quality. We advised the hotel that one of the party is Gluten Free- staff went above and beyond to assist with dietary requirements. Hotel location Ideal.

Great location, happy with rate, very friendly staff, and a really great breakfast. Kocked one star off for the noisy room - 502 which suffers from hearing all the footsteps from the room above. The 5xx rooms are not in the main building, but an annex across the car park. The car park has limited space which means a late arrival could mean parking outside on the street, which is free overnight unlike the hotel car park!

Rooms need update and recover of furniture. Leather chair at desk was in poor state despite staying in an executive suite. Writing desk too was in need of refurbishment. Bathroom clean but poor attention by maintenance had left the panels looking like they had been glued back on by a class of school children.
Bit disappointed really.
Especially for the reputation and price.
Breakfast and pools are superb

I came here on a business trip and was very impressed by everything.
Hotel and room facilities were spot on, clean and comfortable.
Most importantly the staff were amazing. I suffer with epilepsy and unfortunately collapsed at breakfast. My colleagues couldn't praise the hotel staff enough for their quick and professional responses.
A fantastic team and lovely hotel.

The Durham Marriott is an up market hotel. There are parking facilities for those who intend to stay there and it is free, however you must pay for you parking and reclaim a refund at reception. If you are only visiting you must pay for your parking. In the hotel there is a Costa coffee shop for the use of residents and the public. It is a busy area and parking can be difficult.

It was clean and tidy and the staff were very friendly. It sort of lacked in atmosphere. It was disappointing compared to other Marriott Hotels. Overpriced. It was more expensive staying in a standard room in Durham than it was for a superior in York two days before. And I was really annoyed that the rooms in this hotel have no fridge which is a standard feature in most hotels.

A very tired hotel in desperate need of updating.
Beds uncomfortable
Air conditioning dirty, noisy and ineffective
holes in the walls
dirty walls and carpets
broken and collapsing furniture
cobwebs on the fixtures!
Not worth the cost the premier inn is cheaper, cleaner, newer, larger rooms and more comfortable

Superb welcome upon arrival by reception staff, comfy beds and nicely laid out rooms, however spa area was a bit of a let down; jaccuzi advertised on the website was empty (and this unfortunatly was a main reason why I chose this hotel over others) ladies chaning rooms had quite a lot of damp and should really be much cleaner. Thats why i give 4 out of 5.

We visited the spa rather than the hotel so I can only review that. There was a large range of treatments on offer and we really enjoyed our massages. The relaxation room for after you have finished the massages however is also where the people getting treatments next wait so it was actually a little awkward. There was a large swimming pool and sauna.

I loved it, stayed there for several nights, lovely bed, decadent shower and bathroom. Lovely old furniture, clean and spacious room. Wonderful staff and huge breakfast, didnt need to eat until sundown. There is an attached Starbucks, pubs close by and shops a short walk across the bridge. All in all a very pleasant and enjoyable experience

Absolutely fantastic hotel. The staff as usual are fantastic with nothing too much trouble. The restaurant even made a pizza for my 5 year old despite it not being on the menu. All of the staff are excellent, but a special mention goes to Simon who always goes way above and beyond to make your stay fantastic. Will definitely be back

lovely stay at the mariott. the room I had was very spacious, with a large comfortable bed. the pillows were maybe a bit too soft for my liking. the staff was very pleasant which always makes a stay better. I've only used the gym facilities and they were small but adequate for a hotel. I would definitely recommend.

It's a shame that the weather was miserable, because the city is so lovely. But I was glad to be resigned to inside the hotel. Not only is there such a lovely decour, but the staff are so friendly. The room I was in had a beautiful view of the Cathedral, and it was clean, comfortably, and a pleasure to stay in.

Excellent customer service and beautiful hotel.
Check-in was probably best I've had! Upgraded to a nicer room with a massive tv. AC not the best on a hot day but evening and over night it was fine. Breakfast was nice but would have liked more options. Location is perfect for station and city centre.

Expensive but you pay for what you get and had a lot of added extras which easily accumulated very nice bedroom and breakfast. Liked the fact there was an adjoined Starbucks. Disappointing parking spaces as it ran from 12-12 and after that you had to pay which really limited our stay. Overall a good hotel.

It is quite nice place to stay near the old town. Rooms look ok, not very modern but clean. On the other hand you have to pay additional fees for everything beginning from decent Wi-Fi (21st century) and ending on plug adapters that are ussualy for free even in 'worse class' hotels.

Nice hotel, friendly staff, great location, car park is a little tight and it's not free which is a shame. Restaurant food is pretty good quality but watch out for the automatically added 12.5% gratuity. Good facilities too, pool, sauna and hot tub are great ways to kill time.

Nice staff, room to be improved for the housekeeping staff, checklist of the refills for them is a must!
Oh, water for shower (not strong enough) seems always the issue for hotels in UK, besides, it took ages to have the toilet tank to be refilled after flush.

The room was spacious and very comfortable with the king size bed. They keep the old style in the room but very clean and tidy. Breakfast was good, but not many choices for vegetarian. Staffs were all friendly, especially during the breakfast. Very helpful!

Lovely hotel with a very high standard of finish. Staff are very helpful and the service is excellent. The hotel has a limited car park but there is plenty of parking outside the hotel. Hotel is in a great location for bars and the centre of Durham.
