I have been here for two meals recently, with similar findings. The starter portions are a little small, the main course plates a little cool and the wait for service is too long. The overall standard of the meals is reasonable, but not as sensational as the surroundings might lead you to expect. Not one of our group thought their meal was bad, but each person commented that the overall taste was a little 'bland' and 'unimaginative'. Lacking something to elevate it above some of Shropshire's other 'gastro-pubs'. I don't really understand this, because the place is supposed to have a top chef. If that's the case, how can a £20 steak come out garnished with a stone cold mushroom and a 'Provencale' tomato that is basically a slice of tomato with some green powder (out of a packet?) sprinkled on it? The drink (beer in my case) was again OK, but not as perfectly kept as it should be, in a place like this. The venue itself is absolutely stunning, dating back to the 1400s, but benefiting from a recent high quality make-over, which achieves the seemingly impossible, by being both sympathetic to the age of the building but also quirky and modern. The (ever changing) external LED lighting that softly highlights the half timbered frame against the mediaeval cobbles below is a master stroke. There is real history to be had here - this is the inn that Henry Tudor reportedly stayed at, before leaving for the battle of Bosworth, where he defeated and killed Richard III (of recent 'dug up' fame) and was crowned Henry VII. I've given a 'good' score overall, because this venue ticks nearly every box, with a truly first class building and wonderful atmosphere . However, it has the potential to be so much better. With a little bit of work, some attention to detail and some more culinary flair, Henry Tudor House could easily go on to become the best pub / restaurant destination in town. I really hope the owners address the issues raised by myself and many other people (see TripAdvisor) because the potential for this place is huge. It really could be outstanding.

We visited the Henry Tudor House for the first time on Wednesday 28 February 2018 on a snowy lunchtime with our son. I dropped my wife and son off by the chocolate store and then had a real struggle to get back to park in Julian Friars car park due to road works stopping any return to the English Bridge. I ended up going via the Welsh Bridge and Meole Brace before getting back to the English Bridge and then the car park ( Nearly 15 minutes round trip!)

The Henry Tudor House is short uphill walk from the car park - although the snow and ice meant the cobbled street was rather deadly underfoot!

The place was very quiet due to the roadworks and weather. It has an interesting offer of seperate portions of the course to be purchased separately for example I had Corn fed Chicken ( Meat/ Protein course) for £8, basket of Chunky Chips ( Carbs course) for £3 and Cauliflower cheese ( Vegetable) should have been £3 but charged £3.50. Nice well presented food well presented!

The place had suffered a heating problem but had worked very hard to solve the situation putting wall heating on whilst the main heating was quickly fixed!

Good food and well-priced in a stylish pub atmosphere in the heart of Shrewsbury.

We couldn't fault our meals in this place - I had the best bangers and mash I've enjoyed for a while and my partner had the most gourmet-looking fish finger sandwich I have ever seen. The decor is quite high-end for a city pub, and where we were sitting in the conservatory had more of a restaurant feel which I liked. The only downsides were the over-complicated menu and how long we took to be served. The menu has a 'British tapas' theme, and sections that can be ordered all day or part of the day, or overlapping parts of the day. The evening menu is considerably more 'gourmet' than the daytime menu, although the type of food is broadly similar. The pub was busy when we were there, but even taking that into consideration it took far too long to be served our food. So only 4 stars.

One final thing to be aware of - the pork belly looked delicious, but not one to order if you're hungry as the portion size was tiny! Still it was the only 'duff' meal in an otherwise excellent spread.

We had the pleasure of holding our wedding vow renewal ceremony in the private dining room of the HTH, last night, a very busy Saturday night.
From the first moment we booked it, nothing, and I mean nothing, was too much trouble for the wonderful staff.
We were guided through everything by the staff, from the second we walked through the door, they had everything planned for us to the finest detail. They looked after us all in a truly wonderful way, and made us feel so relaxed and at ease. It was seamless service all night long. The food was amazing, and all thanks to the chef and his kitchen for coping with us and a whole venue packed with people all enjoying the wonderful experience to be had at the HTH.
We had the pleasure too, of the wonderful resident acoustic guitarist Joe Seager who played the most wonderful music for us all night.
It truly was a memorable evening, and we would have no hesitation in recommending this stunning venue to anyone.
It was also obvious to us, that the whole place was buzzing with very happy customers.
Thank you to all who made our night so special xx

If you are a vegetarian eat before hand as they must think that vegetarians also need to diet. Visited here with friends on Saturday 27th January, When our meals arrived myself and my fellow veggie surveyed our friends meals, large portions of fish and beef dishes filled their plates compared to a tiny portion of falafel and salad.
I called the waiter across and asked him to observe the size of the 2 tiny vegetarian meals compared to the others, also pointing out that as the meal was pre booked we had no idea of the price so hoped that it was a little cheaper compared to the well stocked plates of our friends.
When the bill arrived the vegetarian meals which in all honesty were the size of starters ,were priced at 13.50 compared to 13.00 for the meat and fish dishes.
We obviously questioned this and were informed by a rather patronising manageress who attempted to insult our intelligence by suggesting it was because price of Cod was so cheap at the moment !!
Well not as cheap as a few chick peas and a side salad !! Left hungry and robbed, wouldn’t recommend.

First off I've not eaten here, only attended a gig so the review is based on that. Positives are there's a large carpark nearby which is free after 6pm, they have free wifi, the building is lovely / well maintained and the bar-staff are friendly and efficient. The acoustics of the room upstairs are good and the toilet facilities are clean. The cappuccino I had was well made and the cost of the drinks was high but manageable.

Negatives: The room upstairs is way too hot and cramped when there's 100 people in there. Being asked to move by the MC to allow a group of three who arrived later for a gig (I'd got there an hour and a half before) and thus losing my spec with a good view - not great. The queuing system wasn't great and probably spoit anyine who was eating.

Would I go there again? Yes. Would I recommend it? Yes.

Out of four people two enjoyed the food one thought it was average and one didn't like it. We had three courses that all took a long time to come out, two hours to serve three courses and then they wanted us to move tables as they needed the table back at 8 which I thought was unreasonable as it was their fault that we wasn't done in the allocated two hours. Also each time we ordered drinks they took a long time to come to us.
Overall I expected a lot better from this place, it's not the cheapest of places to eat, they should really be on top of situation like this.
Maybe they was just having a bad day however we won't be going back to find out unfortunately as we are spoilt for choice in the local area.

This was my first visit to HTH on arrival it was very busy, sometimes a good and a bad thing.
The service was awful, the staff were inexperienced, we had to ask for
the wine list, we did not eat our main until after ten o clock we arrived at 8.30.
No one asked if our food was ok, we had to ask for the tables to be cleared.
One of the tables opposite us wanted to pay and they had to wander round looking for someone.
The HTH is very nicely done but sometimes less people and more attentive staff goes a long way, to me the service is a big part of the eating experience.
We were a group of six I will not return to your restaurant and the same for the rest of the party.

Having eaten here in October 2013, I will not be returning. I had to ask for the sauce that was supposed to accompany the steak which when arrived was distasteful, which when I questioned it the waiter asked 'have I ever tasted peppercorn sauce'. The service is slow we waited almost half an hour for 2 desserts to be served and their after service is a lot to be desired following a letter of complaint - they simply weren't bothered.

Great venue. Good beer, food tasty and only slightly pretentious (the duck lollipop was pleasant enough to dispel the thought that 'I'm eating a thing described as a duck lollipop'). Live music downstairs sometimes or ticketed concerts in a great upstairs room. Lots of exposed wood and beams and a spiral staircase add to the upscale ambience. Not sure about those paintings though. Great comedy venue.

I don't venture into Shrewsbury that often but we decided to have a walk around in the day time and see what's around. We came across Henry Tudor house and decided to have lunch in this lovely building. We had a chicken wrap and chips which doesn't sound that exciting but it was. Very enjoyable indeed. Well worth a visit and will be looking forward to visiting again.

Food was spot on, atmosphere couldn't have been better (it was a Friday night, with a solo guitar performance ) and the staff couldn't have been more helpful.
Ps: ask for a pink polar bear and let's get a trend going. It's an alcoholic milkshake ;)

Cheers guys and thanks again

This is a beautiful place, extremely friendly staff, relaxed surroundings and a good menu to choose from. We ordered and had the scallop to start which was so very tasty but our mains were a little disappointing for the price. Would definitely go back for a few drinks but not to eat.

Just had the most wonderful Mother's Day lunch. The food was of the highest standard and was so tasty. The staff were extremely welcoming, friendly and efficient and as a result we had a very enjoyable experience. Can't wait to go back. Thank you.

My girlfriend & I visited here for an evening meal and drinks. I was told by a friend that the food was out of this world. They were not lying.
The service was second to none and the food & wine were fantastic. We definitely shall be visiting again. 5/5

Very nice place. Food is totally authentic. We had fish n chips... best tartar sauce so far and mini burgers and meat pies. Less authentic atmosphere...kinda hip but still very old pub. Great service too. Wish we found it earlier on our visit to Shrewsbury.

Fantastic afternoon tea for tea. Special gluten free fare for my wife on her birthday. Rarely does she get to eat cake and nice sandwiches (Coeliac will know what l mean). HTH couldn't have done anymore to make the day special. Thank you.

A tasty, high end bite to eat in an unusual but interesting bar/restaurant. They also offer an nice range of beers and have live music on which all sounded good, some newer folk artists were listed when we were in there. I'd go back.

awful. I do not go out into Shrewsbury much but my night was ruined by an over zealous bar staff member who claimed I was too drunk to be served despite younger and more inebriated people were getting served. I will never come here again.

Had a lovely meal with friends and afterwards watched a great band, Willy and the Bandits. A wonderful building with great atmosphere does justice to it's name. Service and staff were friendly and efficient.

Typically English with modern ideas as the lights that change throughout the room in the same key. Staff very knowledgeable, warm and welcoming, they do live music evenings. Menu either to drink or to eat rich.

I've never really liked this place but don't know why. I think it is probably something to do with the layout which isn't quite a bar and isn't quite a lounge. It can seem cramped and noisy.

Amazing decor, a renovation of a very old inn done with great skill and wit. The food is excellent, solid 'tudor' fare with a modern twist, beautifully presented. The pie takes a while to bake!

Enjoyed our meals however service was extremely poor. Waiter didn't seem to know how to even operate the cash machine. Saw two other tables either complain or get up and leave.

Beautiful place to have a lovely lunch or dinner, the 'historic figure' paintings are a great touch! Food and drinks amazing and great service! Will definitely come again

Had several pleasurable family events here in the past. Food and service are top notch. Highly recommended booking the Henry Tudor room for small events, such as Birthdays etc.

Really nice food. Was very busy when we visited, but the staff were friendly and accommodating, helping us pull tables together so we had somewhere to sit.

They squeezed us in at short notice. Service was very attentive. Food was very good. Will definitely return and go for the full Signature menu next time.

Great drinks, atmosphere and food was lovely. If you're looking for huge pub portions this isn't that kind of place. More upmarket and quirky.

I can still taste my crab risotto & sea bass. So delicious. Lovely venue, great gig (Ernie Halter) & a brilliant atmosphere. Highly recommend.
