Went on holiday with my friend, came to this pub as I was told it was the best around, we ordered the food, it came within a reasonable time. The food tasted great, I had the scampi. However when we were back at our lodge, I began feeling unwell, and at 4am the next morning, after 0 hours of sleep due to feeling sick, I had been sick, and continued to do so for the next 3 days, in this time I visited a doctor, where I was told I has food poisoning, from the scampi I had at this pub... it took me a week to fully feel better, the most I'll I've ever felt in my life... never going back here ever again!!!!!

Brilliant place, often call in for food or a quick pint. Located on the corner of the road down from the 199 steps and the cobbled portion of church street. Always has a few in even on nights when town is dead, and can get very busy in peak hours/season, and deservedly so. Food is always to a great standard, mainly pub food (sandwiches, steak, lasagne, etc. With some interesting specials.) good booze selection too which speciality gins whisky and beers. Only gripe is the gents can be a bit rough, though with the amount of foot traffic can be understandable. Would have give 4.5/5 but not an option.

Not great. Very dated and the tables are squeezed in so you are almost dining with the people next to you. An item was missed off my meal, when we requested the item a woman behind the bar came over in a confrontational manner and pointed out I had the item- yes it was on my plate as my husband had kindly given me his. We eventually got the item but the meal was ruined by her attitude and manner. Considering the amount of dining establishments in Whitby, I'd give this a miss. I think it's probably only still in business due to its location.

Dined inside of the pub just past lunchtime as a family. The interior was well decorated though a bit cramped. Bathroom and tables were clean for the most part and the service was fast and pleasant. Ordered Whitby Scampi myself, came with plenty of sides, was very filling. The drinks were also splendid, ordered a mocha that came in a tall glass with a topping of cream, perfect for a winters day. Overall we enjoyed our visit and would dine here again.

We come here every time we come to Whitby, but were very dissapointed this time. The seafood chowder contained very little seafood and was swimming in unseasoned, flavourless, watery milk. The chilli con carne was better until I bit a hard, white, chunk of pot. We immediately told the bar staff, but didn't even receive an apology, let alone offered a replacement or money back. Really not happy with our experience here this time.

This really is a hostelry to match it's location. It's exactly what you would wish for, quirky in the best interpretation Of The term, beautiful polished wood, fascinating pictures and memorabilia, great food (from what we observed and read) wonderful selection of ales and craft beers. Overlooking the river, estuary, sea, pier and beach

I am sorry to give this rating because it will get more people to visit - sorry this is selfish - great atmosphere good beer and the food looks good. First class gin choice - 4 for 14.00 Inc tonic? Whisky Plata I think is 15.95 for similar choice !
Please don't visit cause we won't get seats with harbour views - only joking

Nice pub with good view of the river and harbour. Beer pretty decent but didn't eat, so can't comment on the food. Lots of interesting pictures and artifacts on the walls.
Worth a visit, especially if you've just walked the 199 steps up to the Abbey and back.

Superb ales but the attraction for me was the whisky tasting menu whilst my wife opted for gin. We stayed over in a B'n'B just so we could take advantage of them, which should be recommendation enough. If you're lucky you can get a windy seat with a sea view too.

Just been back here for the second time this week - there are many award winning / recommended places for cod and chips in Whitby and we have tried a few - never been back to one twice though - I think that sums up the quality of food and service at the Duke of York!

Called in for a drink on a family day out in Whitby. Very busy pub with very friendly staff. My wife and daughter both had scampi (one had it with chips and the other had new potatoes) they both agreed it was the nicest scampi they have had. Will definitely be back.

Visited this pub yesterday evening. We had a lovely reasonably priced meal. The pub was lively, with a good atmosphere. They do a great selection of drinks and the gin board they offer is a great idea and way of trying different gins.

A nice place but I was a little disappointed by my meal. I've had bigger starter portions of seafood chowder than the one I had here as a main. It was also mostly potato, sweet corn an carrot. Do try the gin taster board though.

Good pub with a fantastic range of beers & spirits. Dogs aren't allowed and when in Whitby that is a great relief considering the amount of canine companions in the town. Great views of the bay with good music too.

This is advertised as a dog friendly pub on google search but when we got there ,there's a sign saying no dogs allowed and you can't sit outside either as there's also a sign saying no drinks outside

Great pub, and good for a rest after climbing the abbey steps, or even if it’s just recovering from the cobbled streets.
Always had a great lunch here, especially the fish. Does get full quickly though.

Great food, atmosphere and location. The only downside is that when it gets busy it's so cramped and as we had our toddler with us it was a pain with the buggy and the changing facilities are awkward.

Excellent food, my partner got ploughman's lunch which filled the plate and included beautiful off the bone ham and I had the fish chowder (first time) which was wonderful, highly recommend.

Good local pub at the foot of the 199 Abbey steps. Serves good food and beer. Always a good welcome and atmosphere. A quiet pub without distraction of loud music

Nice beer and good service. Barman knew exactly how to pull through the pump, checking the quality after changing the barrel. Proper, traditional pub.

Fantastic food with quite large portion sizes, not to bad price for drinks and a brilliant selection of whiskey and gin. Would definatly visit again.

Expensive for what it is. Ordered a ploughman's lunch and got mainly lettuce and how many ploughman's have sweetcorn and peppers on them??
