They get one star for the location and one for the speed of check in. The rest is sadly lacking - which is a strange contrast considering I can see mostly good reviews about the place, and I am told that 20 years ago, this was 'the place to be'.

Well, firstly, I don't think the place has been decorated in about 20 years! Rooms are very basic, although clean - but very dated. In order to compete with budget hotels out there, there's a lot to be done here.

The restaurant is closed on Sundays which is a bit archaic. The hotel is 24/7 but the restaurant doesn't serve dinner on Sundays and there is nothing much else around - to me this is an obvious revenue stream that is sadly overlooked.

Then there's the leisure facilities. Opening hours are confusing, leaflets say close at 7 on Sundays, but we were all rather abruptly told to leave at 6.30. When I asked for verification at reception, they said opening hours are until 6. Weird - just say what it is!

Some staff here are not great at the whole customer service thing either. Mainly in the leisure area, but restaurant staff were hanging around chatting to each other and just seemed a bit disinterested.

All in all, very disappointing. Sorry the Noke, I won't be back - and I frequently stay over in this area.

Hotel is nice enough but there are lot of things that make this hard to recommend.

There is a lot to like, the food is genuinely tasty and the staff are overall very friendly.

However there are many glaring flaws with this hotel.

The walls of the rooms are paper thin. I could hear the movie the guests in the room next to me were watching and I knew they didn't have the volume up to high. I could also hear the conversations that were had in the rooms ajoining mine.

Many of the rooms overlook the hotels refuse collection area and I have been woken by the sound of the barstaff throwing bottles away.

If you stay in one of these rooms you also get the smell of garbage wafting into your room.

This place is in desperate need of some TLC and as a business traveller I can't recommend it as the most important thing is a good night's sleep, something this hotel cannot gurentee.

Stayed for three nights and even though the room is a bit dated and the shower head had a leak which sprayed my face every time I had a shower..the only thing to let it down was the walls and ceilings. Theyre not insulated enough and can hear everything from people walking around to the person above belching. Besides that the staff are phenomenal! Every single member of staff makes you feel welcome and will do everything to make you feel comfortable, from the chef in the avocado lounge serving delicious and some of the tastiest dishes I've had, to the amazing Peter and Harry behind the bar, I'd like to thank them for their amazing hospitality and their friendly presence. Was nice to have that when away from home for a short while alone. If I am down this way again I will be back. And if you read this Peter, good luck with the wedding I wish you all the best!!

The beds were wobbly and rolled when you moved.... The maid was hoovering the stair and i nearly fell over. The pool man was very negative and was cleaning the pool whilst we were in it, the dirty water was sloshing back into the pool. The bathroom door couldn't close and 2 of the sockets couldn't fully fit a plug, dangerous with a kettle or phone charger. Had to turn hot water to max on the shower to get it to be luke warm. Rooms were way too hot and we had to open the windows to sleep, but the road noise was coming in. The desk/draws were dirty and had a large crack in it. The TV on button didn't turn it on, but volume down did...? How? Only good thing was the rooms were spacious

I visited this hotel recently for an overnight stay with a party of forty people and enjoyed it.The staff were very nice, the room was lovely, clean and perfect for an overnight stay. We enjoyed a beautiful evening meal and breakfast next day was just as nice. They had a very good choice and it was hot not warm.
Unfortunately I think they need to look at the booking in process for large groups. We had to line up and wait which meant that quite a few were outside which wasn't very good.
The outside of the building could do with a spruce up too.
I would recommend this hotel to people as the two negatives in my review didn't affect my stay at all.

Rooms are very clean and comfortable and staff well trained, polite and helpful. Breakfast is excellent. Only learning points are that coffee is very difficult to get at breakfast. Suggest staff ask guests as they are signed in.

A bigger issue is that after leaving the hotel we realised we has lost a wallet. We tried to call the hotel reception for assistance but found there were no options for us to select for reception. Over an hour long period we tried every other option - beauty, leisure, bookings hoping someone could put us thro to reception. We didn't get a response on any of the lines so felt very let down by the chain.

Went here after the Harry Potter tour, for a night stay arranged by my parents for a birthday surprise. The reception staff were really friendly and helpful from the get go. The room was amazing, plenty of space and well looked after and clean. I used the pool while I was there really well kept and clean again with friendly staff on hand to help out. The meal we had that night was good and the staff even sorted out a birthday cake for me which was a lovely surprise. In all the hotel was top quality and the staff were really friendly and helpful. Will defferntly be recommending to friends and family who go to Watford.

We attended as a family of 8 in 4 separate rooms. We had booked for dinner in the restaurant but after having a disappointing lunch (very stale bread, limited options for prementioned dietary requirements) we decided to go elsewhere. When my partner and I checked in, the receptionist told us that another member of our party had billed our room fee to her bill. When we checked out the following morning, the receptionist tried to make us pay for our room! We reminded her that it was being paid for by another room and she shook her head and made us feel quite embarrassed. Poor customer service.

I know it's a bit unfair as I would've given the hotel alone at least three stars (why not more? - appalling breakfasts, noisy rooms with paper thin walls and cold hallways). But what completely killed the experience was the fitness centre. It's run by a third party, however hotel should keep those things in check. Some of the staff are rude, passive aggressive and demonstrating a gatekeeper syndrome. Others are much nicer to deal with (a girl on the reception was a darling), but that should not be happening in places like this.

You have to enjoy this place for a couple reasons. First is the breakfast in the morning. True French press coffee is the standard coffee they serve you (see photo below). The breakfast is really really nice.

Have the steak burger in the pub. Totally solid.
These guys are trying, and if they keep putting money in this place will be truly great.

Gardens are a HUGE plus when you deal with 1's and 0's all day.

Would stay again no hesitation.

I would leave less stars then one if I could. The most un relaxing spa stay I have ever had. Got up in the morning to be told we couldn't use the spa facilities after check out if told this earlier we would have OBVIOUSLY got up early so had to ask to use the pool and check back in just to have one hour in the pool. Reception staff were rude and did not leave relaxed. There was barely anybody in the pool like 2 at most so not sure why the rules are so strict absolutely awful experience.

Booked my parents into this hotel as they were visiting us. Unfortunately that evening there was a wedding party and the guests had little respect for any one else staying, the result they had very little sleep. Hotel staff failed to address the problem and all they recieved was the standard scripted apology from the management. My advice either check before you book if there is a function on or try the holiday inn, at least you will be compensated for a poor stay there.

Superb stay, minus one member of staff in the spa (Matt i believe). Questioned whether we were even guests, and told us we had 'missed the boat' to use the pool. we later disovered it was open for another 40 minutes? He was very stand offish and to be honest, rude. We never got to use the facilties even though it was open, and wasnt impressed with the way he spoke to us. The rest of the stay was a pleasure. Clean room and the main hotel staff were great!

Popped in to meet my Dad for lunch and a beer. Service was good and I must say I had one of the best mushroom soups ever. The only thing that let the meeting down was that one part of the downstairs was being redecorated, whilst the other was being arranged for a conference which involved a steady stream of staff with stacked chairs being dragged around. Apart for those two minor things, everything was fine and I would recommend the hotel for others.

Rooms are awful... they haven't been refurbished in YEARS. Noisy (we could even hear the guests next door having a pee!), tiny rooms, fusty smelling, mismatched towels, carpets all bubbling up, curtains hanging off the rails. Staff all looked VERY UNHAPPY, not a smile in sight. Food wasn't great either, pasta was so overcooked it disintegrated on my fork. We would definitely NOT stay here again. It's not worth a 4 star... no way!

Attended 20-2-18 for a post funeral reception buffet. Excellent buffet in nice surroundings - The Burston Room. But one serious let down. The first thing that many people want in these circumstances is a nice up of tea. When will caterers learn that you cannot make a decent cup of tea with water from a flask - it's not hot enough. Really surprised that a hotel of this quality cannot supply a proper cup of tea. Very disappointing.

Stayed for two nights over the Easter weekend. The food and drink at the hotel was really good but it is the staff that made it for us, they were all really friendly and happy to help with any questions we had! My only critiscm would be the communication between the hotel and leisure facility staff. The gym and pool are owned by a seperate company and there was a lack of understanding on the opening times!

I attended a Ball hosted by my hospital Trust in December 2017. We used the banquet Hall and the catering services. The hall was large and spacious, it was well heated since we were having the ball during the winter months. The Service was welcoming and sociable. Staff were courteous and approachable, it was altogether a pleasant evening at a warm and accommodating venue.

If you don't leave any credit at the reception and you want breakfast in bed and you only carry visa card with you be prepare to put some clothes and go to the reception to make the payment as the room service don't carry a card payment machine ... also they got our order wrong and when you tell them they dont even bother to correct it.

Afternoon tea is awful. When they say you get what you pay for, it is true. Shop bought scones warmed, so they were rock hard, jam yuk,tea if you like drinking hot water with milk! Staff couldn't even speak English. Don't get me started on the sandwiches! Went for a friend's leaving do.Disgusting is my rating.

If you love noise then this is the place for you!
We had literally minimum amount of sleep with the paper thin walls and a harder than wood mattress(it might be good for your back),but it's not for everyone.
Above all the Jacuzzi was out of order ,So the next day we made our swift exit and never looked back!!

Went here for our works Christmas party last night. This took place in the marquee in the hotel grounds. Tables were a little cramped. Food was great and service was good. All very reasonably priced. There was a bar in the marquee which was well run and the music kept us all (a range of ages and tastes) dancing all night.

We were woken several times in the night by people talking and shouting in the corridors. The sound proofing clearly wasnt that good. We were also startled by a fire alarm test that weren't warned about in the morning after a very restless sleep. The tv was very dusty and some channels were unavailable.

Rooms were clean, but cramped and in need of modernisation. It was very warm with the heating off and window open. We were missing the rooms hair dryer, which took two steps from reception to get.the bar was reasonably priced and the marquee tent decent but the staff were quite acerbic and grumpy

Great hotel, staff very friendly, problem with our room was sorted out very quickly. Food in the pub was lovely and the breakfast was perfect for a day of sightseeing and great fuel for the amount of walking we did. We would definitely stay again if we were visiting the area! Thank you!

Decent hotel for the night. Quite run down and the staff were mainly eastern European. The room was spacious although the walls were tissue paper thin and I could literally hear the guy in the next room snoring! Decent location for St Albans but very busy outside traffic wise.

Luxury room with poor TV reception and only three channels. One plug socket at the opposite side of the room to the dressing table. Two dead tablets, one dead phone and one on charge. No fridge. Shame as we stay here when ever we come to visit family and friends, not anymore :o(

Average hotel. Stayed here because they messed up on a cancellation and wouldn't refund the amount so used it for a different date. Noisy bar, average rooms, missed breakfast as reception staff told us a long with a few other guests the wrong time. Better places to stay!

The hotel staff were pleasant and helpful. The room was tidy and well furnished with comfortable chairs as well as a firm mattress. The breakfast buffet had plenty of options and the hot options were actually hot, which isn't always the case at hotel buffets.

Visited on coach trip to thriplow daffodil festival, room ok but because 2 parties were being held in the hotel we were given our evening meal in unheated marquee, with walls blowing in blizzard. Even had cold plates. Not an experience I ever want to repeat.
